Pekka Hokkanen: Elämänhinta
Pekka Hokkanen
Processing this exhibition started in the Summer of 2007, when I got the idea of the first piece. The first finished piece was Fuusio I (Fusion I), in which I already dealt with the theme of the exhibition, complexity of human mind in its beauties and terrors. Back then a thought rose of making two series to the next exhibition, dealing on the same topic, but differing in their pictorial world.
Artistic process is still always changing state. Therefore my goals during the past two years have changed a bit. Instead of the mood I have been aspiring an honest pictorial manifestation of what I feel while living in this society. I have dealt with oppression, animal rights, human disregard and other shortcomings that our society has. Mysteriousness and surrealistic distortion that inspires me time and again has been important to me.
For me art is a channel that allows me to discharge thoughts and emotions dwelling inside me. This is very meditative, because I feel great joy and peace, when the shadow moves out of the way. A work of art is not an object decorating a room or another space. It isn't anything great and insightful, beautiful or ugly. An honest work of art is a soulful product that lives.

Aquarell is my domain. My swift, spontaineous method fits the best this style. To manifest a successful result I need to have a strong vision of what I aim at. I always try to reach for flow state of mind and when I reach it the work carries me towards the destination. I am like a medium that holds lightly from the moving brush. Best aquarell is born of itself, effortlessly and instinctly. Lightness and delicate emotion is visible in the result.
Graphics is my other strong field. There I aim for condensed space of emotions, where a small image holds a big issue. At best the picture addresses and doesn't leave the viewer cold. There are many methods for graphics. I continuously look for new ways to reach the aspired goal and in my exhibition I will represent my latest achievements and modern techniques. Artistic liberty allows several ways to execute, which fascinates my experimental mind.
I live and work in Lahti, where I have my own, peaceful atelier with natural scenery, far away from the noises of the world.
Lahti town cultural bureau has supported organizing the exhibition by project funds.
